This is another of the performing arts section and one of the musical sections. It gives the opportunity to singers of all ages to perform on stage either individually or as part of a group or choir and to receive a professional adjudication of their performance.

  • To comply with Child Protection procedures the Official Nuneaton Festival of Arts application form MUST be completed and signed.
  • Own choice song with composer MUST be stated on the entry form and strictly adhered to.
  • Competitors failing to give the information or offering a different piece on the day will be adjudicated but not marked. The Festival is under a legal obligation to supply to the Performing Right Society details of all items performed at the Festival and the co-operation of teachers and competitors would be appreciated.
  • No competitor may sing the same song in two classes.
  • No changes can be made after the programme is completed.
  • The official accompanist is available for all competitors except choirs.
  • Competitors using the services of the official accompanist MUST forward a copy of all music performed to the section secretary no later than March 31st 2011. Each individual song MUST have your name and class number written on it. Where there is more than one page of music, please DO NOT staple them together. They should be sellotaped in lengths of no more than four sheets. Also, please check the quality of print to make sure that it is legible and there is nothing missing (notes etc.).
  • An ORIGINAL copy of the music performed MUST be brought on the day for the use of the adjudicator.
  • In Class 885 the candidate must bring with them an ORIGINAL backing CD . A CD player will be provided.
  • The timing of classes will be arranged to suit the section as a whole and not to accommodate individual singers.
  • Please, in your own interests, also refer to the general rules.

    Adjudicator:  Luise Horrocks

    Luise Horrocks studied singing on an Advanced Studies at the Royal College of Music after graduating with a degree in English from Oxford University.

    She has performed extensively as a Soprano Soloist throughout the UK and Europe.  While specialising primarily in Oratorio, she has also given many Song Recitals and has appeared on the opera stage at Buxton Opera House.   She has also sung in a series of concerts and Recitals in South Africa and the USA and her wide repertoire extends from works by Monteverdi to Stravinsky.  She has made several recordings and her BBC broadcasts include performances of Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and works by Goehr.

    Luise has held positions as a teacher in both the Junior and Senior departments of the Birmingham Conservatoire and as a visiting lecturer at Birmingham University.  She runs an extensive private teaching practice and is regularly asked to give Master classes.  She works as a Vocal Coach on several residential courses for singers and is a mentor on the CT ABRSM panel.  She has also trained and conducted the Wyre Forest Young Voices choir.

    As an adjudicator member of the British & International Federation of Festivals she has wide experience of many different festivals.  Luise has also travelled widely as an Associate Chief Examiner for Trinity Guildhall, having special responsibility for singing, which includes working on syllabus setting, training new examiners and leading Teacher Workshops.

    78 – 80 MODERATE A performance showing development of technique and/or communication.
    81 – 83 MERIT A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and / or technical ability
    84 – 86 COMMENDED A convincing performance technically & artistically
    87 – 89 DISTINCTION An excellent performance technically & artistically
    90 + OUTSTANDING An exceptional performance technically & artistically
